Idukki is the spice garden of Kerala. With the Sahya ranges occupying most of the geographical area, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. The very name Idukki reminds the people of the largest Arch Dam of Asia which is situated in the heart of Idukki district. About 66% of the State’s Power needs come from the Hydroelectric Power Projects in Idukki.

Idukki is the second largest place in Kerala where the most number of scheduled tribes and tribal ambiguities exist. There are 245 tribal settlements in the District. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in the District. Dairy is the main supplementary source of income of the farmers in the district.The economy of Idukki is predominantly agricultural, Cardamom, tea, tapioca, rice, pepper, rubber, coconut, sugarcane, coffee, ginger, lemon grass and vegetables are the most important agricultural products of the district.

There are several famous tourist destinations in Idukki including Munnar, Vagamon and Thekkady. Vagamon offers good adventure sports like paragliding and rock climbing. Thekkady is famous for boating and some other nature-related activities and several wildlife sanctuaries in Idukki with Eravikulam National Park and Periyar Wildlife sanctuary being very famous. Idukki strikes just the right cord for all nature enthusiasts. The district has a mixed culture of native tribal groups and migrated settlers.
